SINGAPORE : Fifty students came down with food poisoning, cutting short a school camp on Friday. Starting on Wednesday, the annual Secondary 3 camp for some 300 Cedar Girls' Secondary School students at Labrador Adventure Camp was supposed to end on Sunday. Principal Mrs Ou-Yang Geok Cheng said the problem first surfaced on Thursday, when about 30 pupils reported sick with diarrhoea. On Friday, another 21 were affected. Mrs Ou-Yang said that almost all of the girls who reported sick on Thursday had recovered. She said the school stopped accepting food from the caterer once the initial cases were reported, ordering from various fast food restaurants instead. Those who were ill were also sent home to control the spread of the illness. The school camp has been held for the past two years, and this is the first time it has been hit with food poisoning. A mother of one of the students, who did not want to be named, alerted the MediaCorp hotline. She said her daughter called her at about 1pm on Friday to say they were breaking camp. She said, "(My daughter) asked me to pick her up at 4pm because she was vomiting." The hotline caller said inspectors from the Health and Education Ministeries were at the site on Friday to collect food and stool samples. - TODAY/ms
